Kids cooking in English!

Look what K and R made in the returnee class today:

Marshmallow squares! They really did have fun. But they're boys and they didn't want to smile for the camera. :(

How did they make it?

They used a recipe of course!

But first they had to make their recipe:

Phew. It was a lot of work. Lucky we had those marshmallow squares to revive us afterwords, hey?

Thank you!

N-kun and S-chan made these gorgeous Christmas cookies and brought them to class today. The gingerbread man has chocolate buttons (yum!) and the round cookie is decorated with chocolate squiggles. Wow!

And they made, decorated and wrapped these beautiful cookies all before their 10:30 lesson. Double wow!

Thank you again N and S and sorry for the terrible picture. :(

Merry Christmas at REES

Some of the younger students at REES Matsumoto made some great Christmas tree decorations that we put up on the wall. Don't they look festive?

While making it we practised big and little, light green and dark green, saying please and thank you and we had to ask or answer a question to get each sticker we decorated our trees with. Phew! Who knew Christmas could make you so tired?

hot hot hot

Wow. It's really been hot here in Matsumoto lately.

What do you do to keep cool?

My grandmother drinks hot tea. She says it keeps her cooler than drinking ice tea.

My other grandmother sprays herself with a spray bottle of water. She says the cool mist helps her stay cool.

My daughter chews ice-cubes. She crunches and munches her way through the day.

My husband ties a towel around his neck and uses it to wipe the sweat from his face.

Me?

I still haven't found something to keep me cool but on a hot evening an ice cold drink is especially nice.

What do you do to keep cool?

rock cakes

Cakes made of rocks?

No!

Rock cakes are a cookie made with only a little bit of butter and more baking powder than regular cookies so they rise more. They're kind of like a cookie and kind of like a cone and not at all like a rock!

We made them for our June Cooking in English class and they were really good.

Ask for the recipe if you'd like to try them!

Thank you!

A big thank you to Sumire and Nozomu who made these delicious cookies and brought them to school for the teachers.

Can you see all the different shapes?

There were carrots and flowers and airplanes and hearts and so many different shapes.

Thank you!

They were very yummy.

Now that's small!

When I first moved to Japan many of my friends wanted to know about my house. In Australia Japanese houses have a reputation for being very small. Very high tech but very small.

The smallest house I've been to in Japan was a friend's one room apartment in Osaka. It was so small she didn't even have a bath! But it was an apartment, not a house.

Have a look at this picture:

The slender house, which is sandwiched between two unremarkable houses in the middle of a terrace, is 21ft long and 6ft wide

The green building in the middle? It's a house... It's 1.8m wide and 6.4m long. Wow....

Could you live in a house that small? I don't think I could!

Before it was a house it was a donkey stables.

I'm not sure what is worse- a house that is 1.8m wide or a house that used to be a donkey stables!

I'm moving to Pluto!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Did you give anybody chocolate?

Did you get chocolate from anybody?

Did you eat too much chocolate?

I know I did......

Our theme at Richard's Easy English School at the moment is Space.

And for everyone who ate too much chocolate on Valentine's Day space has good news for you!

Use this calculator to work out how much (or how little!) you'd weigh if you lived on another planet.

I don't know about you but I think I'm going to move to Pluto!
